I was also surprised to find out, when I read the Historical Notes in the back, that some of the parts of this book that I scoffed at whilst reading it were actually based on facts. Audiobook Details Recorded Books, Inc. I oof Iggulden’s explanations at the end of the book justifying some of his decisions for the plot to be fascinating. Only the death of the Khan and the fact that his heir was in the front lines and needed to return to claim his birthright prevented the likelihood of most of Europe becoming part of the Mongol empire.


I warm up to this guy after he spears his younger siblings children of the Xi Xia princess who view spoiler [assassinated Genghis Khan hide spoiler ] from death in the end of the third book, I warm up My review for the prequel: I had a real sense of the terror felt by the Europeans as the Golden Horde destroyed one army after another and slaughtered the people of any city that failed to surrender.

It began with the betrayal of a lord by a king On the other hand if you did hear this book as the first book then you’d most likely want to go through the first three books to get the full rich story of the rise of the Khan empire.

I was born in the normal e,pire inand vaguely remember half-pennies and sixpences. Recently I read that the name ‘Mongol’ means ‘Sliver’ or ‘Eternal River’ or ‘Brave Warriors’, that helps to partly explain the title of this book. This was the more action packed part of the book.

This is the final installmen I remember starting this series and thinking to myself just how little information we usually get about the Eastern cultures trough our educational system. The story gets even better as the Mongols sack Russia and Europe.

Although I greatly enjoyed this book, it had a very different feel from the first 3 books. Jan 02, Mizuki rated it really liked it.

Iggulden also includes a rather extensive author’s note wherein he described the liberties that he took in combining characters and describing events that he surmised, based on the available information. The rivalry between Chagatai and Ogedei is palpable and threatens to destroy the dynasty.

Just the basics really. The most fascinating part for me was the Mongol invasion of Europe under the great general Tsubodai.

Conn Iggulden Narrated by: Although this is the fourth book in the series of Genghis Khan this book could actually stand alone because this is the next generation afte Ghengis has died.

It’s rather chilling how close the world came to not ever having what we now know as “the West” and it had nothing to do with anyone in Europe or Russia having an answer to the Mongol war machine.

Now that he’s gone, who gets to be khan is not so clear cut. And I learned something, which is always good. This was a fascinating sojourn in a little known to westerners time and place. I’ve savoured every sword slash and pike thrust of Conn Iggulden’s romp through Central Igguden in the ‘Conqueror’ series.
