An extremely clever sleuht thought provoking play. I found this story intriguing as both characters fail to understand and continually underestimate each other. Oh boy, did he do it right! He was a barrister before becoming a writer. Wyke’s home reflects his obsession with the inventions and deceptions of fiction and his fascination with games and game-playing. Sleuth review – few thrills to be had in Shaffer’s outdated mystery

I love the stories that pit an older man or woman against a younger one in this kind of head-to-head battle of wits with all the games being played and the antjony agendas on either side. Whilst some of the interactions between the two men are similar, the film has roles for not just Wyke’s wife, but also his second, younger wife, the Tindle character’s object of desire, and the outcome for the characters is darker.
I’m in the middle of watching the original movie with Olivier and Caine which was adapted to screen by Shaffer himself. I wasn’t looking forward to reading this. The most famous adaptation is the film with Slfuth Olivier and Michael Caine. Another great twisty turny plot.
